In the early 1990s, Pastor Grant Edwards was running into a persistent problem: Most of the new believers coming to faith were walking out the back door of his church within just a few weeks or months. So Grant focused his attention on this issue and ultimately realized that a discipleship process designed with the new believer in mind was the answer.
Over time, this discipleship process, originally called Discipling Another To Love Jesus, was developed, refined, and implemented by Grant for his church. The new discipleship process quickly yielded dramatic results in the retention and growth of new believers while also empowering and releasing many disciplers. As word spread, churches and ministries from all over began contacting Grant asking him to help equip their churches with this discipleship process, which is now known as First Steps Discipleship.
Reaching and Keeping the Harvest
Guided by both the Great Commission and the Great Commandment, First Steps is a one-on-one discipleship process that guides new and renewed believers through the initial stages of their faith walk. Using the First Steps Discipleship Workbook and one-on-one relationships, First Steps allows for greater intimacy and accountability as new believers learn to grow and mature in the Lord, which significantly increases the likelihood that they become committed followers. And, once discipled, new disciples can actually disciple others.
